Fred Thomas

Senior Research Software Engineer

Environmental Change Institute

Fred joined OPSIS and the ECI in May 2022. He is a senior research software engineer, working on modelling environmental risk to infrastructure systems.

He does things like:

  • Lead a project developing a model of tropical cyclone impact upon electricity transmission and distribution
  • Conduct an assessment of global flood risk to road and rail networks for COP28
  • Deliver software carpentry courses to teach researchers how to code
  • Supervise DPhil candidate Ji Jeong in environmental risks to renewable energy
  • Software tool development for: transport routing, cyclone wind field estimation, risk visualisation, etc.

Prior to the ECI Fred worked for the Institute for Environmental Analytics at the University of Reading, modelling renewable energy facilities. Fred holds a PhD in nuclear fusion research from the University of York, completed at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy in Oxfordshire. His research concerned sources of uncertainty (and potential remedies) in the modelling of fusion device neutronics.

Fred grew up on a farm and likes being outside.
