Fred joined OPSIS in May 2022. He is a research software engineer, working on modelling environmental risk to infrastructure systems. This involves software tool development and research to understand how a changing climate will impact water, transport, energy, etc. systems at global, regional and national levels. He is currently spending much of his time developing a model of tropical cyclone impact upon electricity transmission and distribution. Part of his role is encouraging and disseminating good (enough) software practices to the rest of the group.
Prior to the ECI Fred worked for the Institute for Environmental Analytics at the University of Reading. Fred holds a PhD in nuclear fusion research from the University of York, completed at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy. His research concerned the sources of uncertainty (and potential remedies) in the modelling of fusion device neutronics.
